From Screening to Strength: Optimizing Bone Health in the Female Athlete

Join us for an in-person discussion regarding bone health in the female athlete across all ages from adolescents to menopause from bone health experts in the field with nutrition considerations from a registered dietitian.

Ellen Girouard, PT, DPT, OCS is a physical therapist specializing in orthopedic and running-related injuries. She earned her Doctor of Physical Therapy from Simmons University in 2016 after completing her Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science there in 2014. During her time at Simmons, she competed in Division III Cross Country, worked as a faculty assistant at the Harvard School of Public Health focusing on global healthcare reform, and served as committee member on the APTA Massachusetts student board.

Ellen holds advanced credentials including her Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) certification, UESCA Running Coach certification, and RED-S certification. She has also completed extensive mentorship training with Nate Carlson, PT, and Chris Johnson, PT, focusing on the management of bone stress injuries and safe return-to-running progression.

In addition to her clinical work, Ellen serves as a Sports Medicine affiliate at the University of Rhode Island, supporting all Division I athletic teams. She is the founder of the Running Performance Clinic at Ortho Rhode Island, where she works with runners of all levels to reduce injury risk, enhance performance, develop marathon training plans, and provide foundational education on nutrition and bone health.

 

Joanna Lanz, FNP-BC

Joanna Lanz holds Board Certifications as a Certified Orthopaedic Nurse Practitioner and a Family Nurse Practitioner through the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. Joanna has earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Colorado at Boulder, an associate degree in nursing from the Community College of Rhode Island, a bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Rhode Island, and a master of science in nursing from Catholic University of America.

Joanna was drawn to the field of orthopedics as a collegiate swimmer, when she discovered proper biomechanics can affect musculoskeletal health. Joanna’s specialties include work in our Ortho RI Express Clinic, assisting patients with same- and next-day appointments. Joanna enjoys the high-energy setting of our Express clinics, which focus on quickly assessing and identifying orthopedic problems to help provide prompt and seamless follow-up with the assistance of the team of Ortho Rhode Island providers. In addition to her work in Express, Joanna is a provider with our Bone Health Clinic, helping patients who have sustained fractures heal more quickly and developing treatment plans to help reduce the risk of future fractures.

Kelli Kidd, MS, RD, CSSD, LDN
Kelli Kidd is in her seventh year at the University of Rhode Island as the Sports Nutrition Specialist.
Kidd came to URI from Bryant University. Prior to Bryant University, she served as the Dietitian for the United States Corps of Cadets at the United States Military Academy at West Point where she worked extensively with the athletes. Kelli additionally worked as a nutrition consultant for the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI) G-League’s Long Island Nets Basketball Team. And she authored the e-book, “Grocery Shopping for Athletes” for My Sports Dietitian. Kidd earned her B.S. in Nutrition with a minor in Exercise Science from Penn State University. There she was a member of the Women’s Cross-Country & Track teams and earned All-American honors in the 10,000M. She completed her dietetic internship at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, GA. Afterwards, Kidd completed her Master’s degree in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Washington. She earned her diploma in Sports Nutrition from the International Olympic Committee and is a Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics

Charlotte Moriarty, MD, PhD

As a primary care sports medicine physician, Dr. Moriarty is trained in the orthopedic and general medical care of the athlete. She has a passion for working with young athletes, including children, adolescents, and collegiate athletes. Her sports medicine practice includes the care of acute strains and sprains, athletic overuse injuries, stress fractures, relative energy-deficiency in sports syndrome (RED-S), sports-related concussions, musculoskeletal ultrasound, and orthobiologics. She currently serves as team physician for North Kingstown High School. She has previously been involved as an event physician in endurance events ranging from the Boston Marathon to Ironman to the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge. She has also worked extensively with professional hockey players in the East Coast Hockey League, as well as various high school and collegiate-level sports.

Dr. Moriarty believes in the complete care of the athlete or active individual, utilizing a multidisciplinary approach. Here at Ortho Rhode Island, she feels fortunate to have orthopedic and sports medicine, physical therapy, performance training and athletic training all within the same practice. She takes advantage of these resources as well as resources in the community to individualize each and every treatment plan.

Coming from a background in family medicine, her approach to care is patient-centered. She enjoys learning about her patients and the intricate details of their sport and lifestyle. Getting to know their passions, goals, and methods of progression towards those goals helps her pinpoint a diagnosis and work with each patient to develop the optimal treatment plan. She utilizes a conservative, less-is-more approach, starting with the least invasive therapies and progressing to more invasive modalities only as necessary. Ultimately, she wants to help guide each patient back to the sport or activity they love.

She is a former collegiate Equestrian who helped her Skidmore College team to a national championship in 1999. She currently enjoys training and competing in the sport of CrossFit, as well as playing hockey and riding horses with her children.
